The much anticipated Bonhams auction topped £1.4 million, with the top selling lot being a 1952 Vincent Black Shadow ex works machine. One of only two made by the factory for a 24 hour endurance test, the bike sadly failed to complete its task due to mechanical failure – a problem which befell the second factory entry, too. But they managed the six hour record, with an impressive 100.6mph

In this video TCM editor James explains the history of this rare motorcycle and also singles out a beautifully restored 1926 Brough SS80-100 for a technical teach in. That’s not a misprint, because it started life as an SS80 but the engine was replaced with the overhead valve SS100 powerplant later on in its life.
