Cheers and Throttle: The Motorcycles That Carried Victory

On VE Day, we remember the roar of engines that helped power Britain to triumph and the brave dispatch riders who steered history on two wheels.

Through the mud and mayhem of war, these soldiers delivered vital messages when radios faltered and wires failed. Riding trusty British machines such as BSA M20s, Norton 16Hs, Triumph 3HWs, and the iconic Matchless models, they carved a path through chaos, from the battlefronts of Europe to the bombed streets of Britain.

In scenes echoed by the jubilant crowds that cheered Field Marshal Montgomery during his victorious visit to liberated Copenhagen, escorted proudly by motorcyclists on their “Teledraulic” Matchlesses, these riders symbolised speed, courage, and unbreakable communication.

Today, those wartime bikes are lovingly restored by enthusiasts. They still thunder across parades, re-enactments, and commemorations like VE Day 80, honouring the unsung heroes who kept the Allied effort connected, one high-speed delivery at a time.
