Hugh Anderson (Suzuki) took the 50cc race, Dan Shorey (Bultaco) the 125cc, Fritz Scheidegger (BMW) the first sidecar race from Max Deubel (BMW), with a reversal of positions for the second event. Derek Minter (Honda) took the 250 race from teammate Jim Redman and the 350 on a Norton from similarly mounted Mike Hailwood. Bob McIntyre (285cc Honda) started the 350 event on the back row and raced into the lead before the ‘engine just stopped’ on lap eight.
Amid clouds of spray and steam, the 500s set off, with McIntyre, Phil Read, Minter, Anderson and Hailwood, like many others, Manx Norton mounted. Minter was flying with Read second and McIntyre third. Bob eventually passed Read then at Clay Hill on lap 19 he crashed heavily and was rushed to hospital. Nine days later, on August 15, 1962, Bob McIntyre succumbed to his injuries. He was 33.
Born Robert MacGregor McIntyre on October 28, 1928, at Scotstoun, Glasgow, he won his first IoM TTs in 1957 (Junior and Senior) on works Gileras, and during the Senior race became the first rider to lap the Mountain circuit at over 100mph. Bob McIntyre’s funeral was held at Daldowie Crematorium, Glasgow.
